richardw27 For some unknown reason it has taken me way too long to finally get round to purchasing the album. It's utterly beautiful - ambient, melancholic, uplifting, dreamy, just gorgeous. Bobby's vocals and music along with the gorgeous voices of Beth and Anne Mari make this is a true listening pleasure
There Is No Teenage Love

There Is No Teenage Love A phenomenally great record. There is something to this record that I can’t put my finger on, there’s a spiritual, emotional, and intellectual honesty that just makes it feel out of time (in a perfect way). Love the sparse production.

Favorite of 2022 (and would have been on my favorites of 1992 –which it effortlessly evokes – had it come out that year). Favorite track: White, Upon Your Grave.

Held up By an angel All strength leaving Scattering  The body must be broken The cup must be drunk from Blood upon  Blood upon The ground Within Searing  Screaming  Almost grieving  Journeying  To arrive at acceptance  Whatever's wanted  Whatever's wanted Will be done

You just need a sunrise in your life You just need to make it to first light You just need a sunrise Watch the changing sky and feel Another change coming on You can leave the night and belong Leave the night and belong You just need a rising sun You don't have to carry that sense There's something of you of the past tense A memory yet still alive Just a ghost that never died Watch the changing sky and feel Another change coming on You can leave the night and belong Leave the night and belong You just need a rising sun A rising sun A rising sun The dawn will hold you in its glow Won't let you down Won't let you go You just need the morning to begin You just need the morning

There is no spell that you can cast To slow time's march Leaf fall is over They grew, they fell, so fast There is no spell that you can cast I close my eyes and dive into the darkness Away, away from this fragile failing frame But I open them to this room How did I get here so soon? How did I get here so soon? A golden evening long since passed A whole life ahead The final rays and then the fade To this single bed One setting sun Two silhouettes All I want is to escape but I cannot run Away, away from this shadow I've become Where looking back is all I do How did I get here so soon? How did I get here so soon? I close my eyes and dive into the darkness Away, away from this fragile failing frame But I open them to this room How did I get here so soon? How did I get here so soon?

In the short while Of our stay In this place Of half smiles We have to be careful How we handle What we do find True understanding Has proved a rarity True connections are few And far between Perfumed meadows of May snow Perfumed meadows of May snow I carry an ache The time The time We waste With each passing day You seem to slip Further away Don't let time and distance Do what they do Don't let this fall through Don't let time and distance Do what they do Don't let this fall through Perfumed meadows of May snow Perfumed meadows of May snow
5.
Maintain The mood Calm and simple Calm and simple The white of the pillow Maintain The mood Quiet and precise Nothing to decide Nothing left to chance The breath Being held Through tender takes Degrees of light The intimate night Observe Expressions Enhance them Call upon What makes the person The stories we hold Just want to be told We carry words That long to be heard We just want to be heard What's carefully arranged What's carefully arranged The camera paints The intimate night
6.
The world goes about its business Nothing she needs to witness She moves to her own refrain Sending out a signal Calling to her double It'll take as long as it takes For the answer to break When you look around, do you see what I see? When you look around, when you look around? When you look around, do you see what I see? Clearly displayed Are we on the same page? When you look around? The world spins on its axis Busy and relentless She reads her days away Sending out a signal From her quiet corner Unafraid to wait She turns the page Do you see what I see?
7.
A trail of petals White petals Became The Milky Way The scent of decay The scent of decay But the end of dark Winter days In sacred groves In sacred groves In sacred groves Of hawthorn Of hawthorn An equinox scattering / Blood and bandages Blossom for a wedding / Time passes differently An equinox scattering / Blood and bandages Blossom for a wedding / Down beyond the May tree Ashes round the May tree / Down beyond the May tree
8.
The flashing of the air raid plays upon her face "Come away from the window, come away" Someone had to Take a stand and say Something Be counted Offer Resistance The sun still rises And the moon still reappears Both indifferent To the war we wage down here To only hear the wind Moving through the trees No more than A whisper Nature The future “The promise of Spring and I have to go The promise of Spring and I have to go” White, upon your grave I place a rose Leaving footprints I will walk the silent earth Breathing the freedom in For which I thirst I know we're right I stand by every word Twilight Broad daylight Changes the signal Snow is open To interpretation “The promise of Spring And I have to go The promise of Spring and I have to go” White Upon your grave I place a rose White Upon your grave I place a rose
9.
Lost to so much more When the edges blur While the temporal pales  Magic and spirit sail Of a heaven missed Catching glimpses Then back to watching The world, unsure One eye on the door To the exiled Nature speaks To the hollowest feeling A reminder calling Eternity sings  Between The breaking Lost to so much more
10.
A lonely calm Presides A suitcase by Her side A stillness to Break hearts This is where her life starts Almost twilight A breath away From twilight The day may be ending But it's the beginning Of her life Of her life Anticipation Fills the passing minutes The air alive With slow motion spirits She thinks by now They'll see she's gone Running to Not running from Not running from Almost twilight A breath away From twilight The day may be ending But it's the beginning Of her life Of her life A checkered skirt A ponytail Distant water Low lying clouds A deserted road Curves out of sight Almost twilight
11.
Don't let the times define you Let the sky remind you The loudest voices are here and gone Here and gone Don't let the lies weigh upon you Protect the light inside you There are two choices right or wrong Right or wrong Silence the static And let the silence hold you The simplest place to start Is to remember you have a heart Remember you have a heart Don't let the times define you Let the sky remind you What matters and what does not What matters and what does not

“Overwintering” is the new album from Bobby Wratten (THE FIELD MICE, TREMBLING BLUE STARS), recording as LIGHTNING IN A TWILIGHT HOUR. The release follows on from the recent stand-alone 7" “The Circling Of The Seasons” and the 2015 album “Fragments Of A Former Moon”.

A collection of eleven songs overseen in collaboration with Ian Catt; a partnership dating back to the earliest days of the regularly referenced THE FIELD MICE. Both Anne Mari Davies and Michael Hiscock from THE FIELD MICE feature throughout this latest addition to Bobby's discography. Also present is Beth Arzy (TREMBLING BLUE STARS, JETSTREAM PONY, THE LUXEMBOURG SIGNAL), and Harvey Brown who adds guitar to the record's penultimate track.

While some songs entered the studio fully formed, more than half of “Overwintering” began life as purely musical landscapes before beginning a journey, eventually resulting in songs like the opener, “Lincoln Green”; a subtle introduction to this world of people and places, text and texture. The hypnotic psychedelia of “Delphinium” follows, featuring the first of four lead vocals by Anne Mari Davies.

Side one draws to a close with “Leaf Fall Is Over”; a pop song that holds an inner darkness exploring the rarely addressed theme of old age. "All I want is to escape, but I cannot run / Away, away, from this shadow I've become / Where looking back is all I do / How did I get here soon?". The song features Beth’s first appearance providing subtle, layered backing vocals.

Side two opens with “Perfumed Meadows Of May Snow”. The flowering of Swiss narcissus meets OPAL and GALAXIE 500, in a soft psychedelic haze. Percussive clicks, vinyl pops and reverbed guitar notes form the backdrop of “The Cinematographer As Painter”. A slowly building hymn to filmmaking.

The second vinyl opens with the deconstructed dub-pop of “Her Own Refrain”. Traditional elements being removed, leaving a ghost of a song whose chorus suddenly switches into sharp focus.

“In Sacred Groves Of Hawthorn” features clear folk influences with its alternative tuning and pastoral feel. A tale of the Holy Thorn and the folklore it birthed. “White, Upon Your Grave” tells of incredible courage in the face of unspeakable evil and dreams of better times. Beth returns on backing vocals while sped up guitars emulate mandolins. The minimalism of “Natural Light” concludes this side with eerie harmonies and a lyric haunted by occasionally glimpsed magic; possibly the most abstract moment on the album, as songwriting meets sculpted sound.

“Slow Motion Spirits” sets a photograph to music. Rhythmic noise and delayed guitars provide the setting for a scene at day's end. Michael's instantly recognisable bass style and Anne Mari’s lead, harmony and counter melody vocals add to the slowly developing picture.

Finally, “Overwintering” draws to a close with “Don't Let The Times Define You”. A song like glowing embers, favouring eternity over insignificance, and the bigger picture over the immediate here and now. A wish to "silence the static".

With a painting by renowned writer and musician David Toop adorning the sleeve, “Overwintering” will be released on April 1st 2022.
